The 2005 Mini Baja Car: “Shifter Kart”
The first year for Virginia Baja Racing was a great success for UVA mechanical engineering students. In their spare time, a group of four passionate students setup up the Baja shop, obtained funding, designed a Baja racecar, built the Baja buggy, and raced the car. Affectionately named “Shifter Kart” by the UVa Baja team, this Baja car is a blast to drive and is the only manual car in UVA’s stable. It’s innovative powertrain design utilizing a 5-speed Honda ATV transmission scored the team a 2nd place in “Originality and Innovation” at the SAE Baja Competition. The team’s goal was to build a running Baja car and make it to the SAE Baja competition. They realized this goal and paved the way for future success for Virginia Baja Racing.
